New addition to the Illovo area

6 August 2010

There's a new building going up on the corner of Chaplin and Oxford Roads, just outside the borders of the Illovo Boulevard.

The new development will be called The Pin Stripe Building, and will be erected where the present building, which was once the US Trade consulate, now stands. The Pin Stripe will be a four-level building with two basements for parking and 5738 square meters of office space.

Jacarandas lend grace to the Boulevard

6 August 2010

At the entrance to the Santam building is a lane lined with large jacaranda trees. These trees date back to when Fricker Road was a residential suburban road in the late 1990s, and when the Santam property was a private home on two acres with this long winding driveway up to the main entrance of the house. Santam is required to maintain these jacarandas trees by the Johannesburg Heritage Trust.

Traffic light problem on Melville Road at the intersection of Harries & Upfill Roads, Illovo

6 August 2010

Tina White, IBMD manager, writes to Nicole Vergos, of PR and Communications at Bombela Civils Joint Venture (Pty) Ltd:

"Please be aware that there is still no change to the traffic light problem. The existing and ongoing problem remains the same that if one is travelling from the southerly direction on Melville Rd going north, the traffic lights are on green for 16 seconds and on red for 60 seconds, so the build-up of traffic at peak hours remains a continuing problem.

Before, during and after the World Cup

6 August 2010

Theresa Griffiths of Kagiso wrote during the World Cup:

"On Wednesday, 9 June 2010 something very strange happened in Fricker Road. At precisely 12pm people erupted from all the offices in the precinct. Honking vuvuzelas, whistling and shouting could be heard for miles as people dressed in business suits and supporter outfits alike, made a huge noise to show their support for Bafana Bafana. Kagiso staff happily joined in the fray and we knew then, that this was going to be BIG!
